The Lost Tales
The Story of the Quonset: Let me take you back to years ago. It was the year 1974 and two Japanese brothers moved to small town North Dakota to start their farming dreams..... "Oh, dear bruva, we have finery made it to the home rand. We canna start to farm many crop," said Daewoo. Daewoo was the older of two brothers (or bruvas). It was his idea to move to North Dakota, America to start a life of farming and becoming one with the land. "Yes. But how shar we start? We have broughten so much things from Osaka, we cannot possibry fit all in the house," replied Quon. Quon was the younger brother. He looked up to Daewoo and listened to him without question. Daewoo and Quon began walking around their two acre plot of land, more than any man could obtain in Japan. They smiled at the prospect of farming this land and hoped to pass the farm onto their children... not that they would have children together, you get the idea. But it also worried Daewoo that they did not know how to farm. But like any pioneer, they could not give up. They drove to the local seed shop for some seed. Not just any seed but crop startin' seed. Daewoo was hoping to have two acres of wheat field within two months. They would need some quick results as it was October and they needed food for the coming winter. Several days went by and Daewoo and Quon planted their seed at a feverish pace until the entire two acre plot of land was covered. They looked out at the field with a sense of accomplishment. "Well Quon, we did it, we have pranted the seed. Now we must wait for the food to grow and then we eat!" Exclaimed Daewoo. "Yes Daewoo, I canna not wait to eat dis wheat. It will make good sandich," said Quon happily. That evening Daewoo and Quon went to sleep with visions of wheat sandwhiches in their heads, whatever a wheat sandwhich is. The next morning they came out of their two room trailer home and were ready to start harvesting some wheat when Quon suddenly began screaming in rage. "Somebody has taken both of da wheer barrows!" "What are we to do, Quon!? We must devise a large, preferabry domed, shelter in which to rock up our farming equipment," said Daewoo. So Daewoo and Quon went into the house and began thinking up ideas in which to protect their farming equipment. Suddenly Daewoo had an idea, "I've got it! I will make a large buirding out of tin and other material!" As Daewoo explained the idea to Quon they began to get excited and immediately set out for town to purchase the tin and other material. After two weeks of solid work, they were finally finished with their tin, domed building. "Well, Quon, we did it. We have buirt our plotection from thieves." "Yes, bruva, but what shall we call it?" asked Quon. "In honor of you my bruva, I wished to name it a Quon but we are in America now. Americans have longer names than just simple Quon. We must think of sumfthing better," replied Daewoo. "Oh, I thank you bruva for considering my name as honoraber name for buirding but you are right, it must be ronger." "If there was onry something we could add to Quon to make it a better name," thought Daewoo. "Yes bruva, but what name shall we set--" "That's it, set. I shall name it a Quonset!" "Oh bruva, that is an exerent name!" exclaimed Quon, bowing in honor to his older brother. WIth the Quonset built and named, Daewoo and Quon would no longer have to worry about their equipment getting stolen or damaged by Mother Nature. But they did have to worry about the upcoming winter, but that is another story...... So ends the exciting tale of how the common domed, tin framed equipment shed came to be. The Quonset. |
